World must ‘wake up to the challenges brought out by China,’ says US Defense Secretary.

Mark Esper, US Defense Secretary called on the global community to “wake up to face the challenges brought out by China,” telling an audience of international leaders and top decision-makers on Saturday, that the United State’s concerns about coronavirus infected China.

“It is necessary that we, as a global community, wake up to the challenges brought out by China’s non-accountability of the international, rules-based order,” Mark Esper said, adding that infected China is now the United state’s top concern.

Speaking during an address at the 2020 Munich Security Conference in Germany, Mark said China topped the Pentagon’s list of potential adversaries, followed by Russia and “rogue states” like North Korea and Iran.

The president Trump administration had been putting pressure on European allies for a total ban on Huawei products, alleging that China could use the equipment for snooping.

Last month, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson opted to go ahead with plans to let the Chinese company develop Britain’s 5G network as part of his agenda of “leveling up” regions across the country through improved infrastructure.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also spoke at the conference, where he refuted assertions that the US under Mr Trump was rejecting its traditional international leadership role.

“I’m happy to report that the death of the transatlantic alliance is grossly over-exaggerated,” Pompeo said. “The West is winning.”
